Heins and Smith left Chicago for Washington with over 100 others, including CEO Scott Kirby. One of the engines on their Boeing 737 Max 8 utilizes 100% non-petroleum sustainable aviation fuel. “We ran jet fuel in the left engine and this 100% sustainable fuel in the right engine to prove that there is no change in the airplane's performance,” Smith added. Heins stated there was no change in the pilot, crew, or passenger experience. United routinely blends biomass with conventional fuel. “Feedstock is the sustainable fuel,” Smith remarked.
Growing sustainable fuel output and regulatory permission are required to fly into an eco-friendly future. United said the work and research done in Denver will help it achieve its goal of zero GHG emissions by 2050.
